The supplies for exams at a Glasgow secondary raised the eyebrows of a new invigilator when she noticed a box of paper tissues included among the stash of tea, biscuits and milk.

An old hand explained that tissues were an essential part of any good exam beak’s kit: “There’s always at least one sneezing wean who asks you for a tissue, not to mention the inevitable snorting, sleeve-wiping boy with a snottery nose in every exam whom you can watch no longer. Never forget the tissues.”
