Year 9 girls at Bolton School are helping a Maasai tribe to speak English by creating films of themselves to be used as learning materials. The project came about after pupils used Skype during a geography lesson to link up with an educational centre in north Tanzania set up by two alumni, Max Griffiths and Sam Yates. Elizabeth Moore, 14, said: “It is nice to think of a piece of Tanzania developing where the locals speak English with a Bolton accent.”

Lincolnshire Montessori is celebrating its tenth birthday. It started as a small nursery with directors Sylvia Archer and Theresa Ellerby caring for three children, but the award-winning organisation now has 45 staff and more than 200 pupils on roll across two sites in the county.

Children’s Commissioner Maggie Atkinson met local pupils when she addressed the Cumbria Children’s Trust Leadership Conference. Moira Swann, director of children’s services at the county council, said: “She lived up to her reputation for plain speaking and enthusiasm.”

Pupils from Grace Dieu Manor School in Leicestershire marked half-term with a day of activities. Years 7 and 8 spent the morning in a maths workshop with Barbara Rundle, pictured, from the Maths Education Centre at Loughborough University. In the afternoon, pupils took part in a sponsored walk.

The Duke of Gloucester was welcomed by pupils and staff at Bournville Infant School in Birmingham on the centenary of its foundation by chocolate magnate and philanthropist George Cadbury.
