The British Educational and Communications Technology Agency’s ICT Advice department runs conferences and online training events in partnership with the subject associations. Coming up is an online conference co-organised with the National Association of Music Educators. Called “Using ICT to support the teaching and learning of music”, it will take place from November 17-21 and focus on five strands for KS2-3 teachers. The professional development department of the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music is offering jazz workshops in February and July for clarinet, saxophone, trumpet and trombone teachers. Students are encouraged to improvise from the outset and there will be an introduction to the structure and content of the new AB jazz exams for these instruments.

Alternatively, schools can request a jazz workshop at their own venue for a minimum of 20 teachers.

Music Live! 2003 will be held at the National Exhibition Centre, Birmingham, November 20-23. With more than 130 exhibitors the show caters for all aspects of music making. On Education Day, November 21, an expanded programme of seminars will give advice and training on aspects of careers in the music industry from roadie to rock star. They include: Kevin Hughes on how to record and produce pop, Dave Kilminster on working together as guitarists; and Aziz’s ethnic music workshop and clinic. Students can also try out new instruments from decks to drums, guitars to keyboards, woodwind to home recording.
