Barnardo’s Yorkshire region courses for teachers and teaching assistants aim to encourage joint training: “Supporting students with dyspraxia”: York, March 2; Sheffield, March 18 (topics include: the effect of dyspraxia; handwriting and dyspraxia; developing co-ordination skills).

“Being positive about behaviour”, York, March 4; Sheffield, March 19 (topics include: positive behaviour management; using praise effectively; developing self-esteem; what to do in a crisis). “Supporting students with autistic spectrum disorders”: Leeds, March 9; York, March 16; Sheffield, March 25. Fee per course: pound;45 per person or pound;80 for a teacher and teaching assistant from the same school. One-day courses on a range of subjects can be run at schools for pound;300 per day within Yorkshire or pound;400 per day anywhere else in the UK.

“Sticks and stones? Effective therapeutic approaches to dealing with bullying” is the theme of a National Union of Teachers OnPupil seminar taking place at Hamilton House, Mabledon Place, London WC1 on March 10. Led by Joy Gilson from the Effective Therapy Centre, Hertford, who has worked in Hertfordshire schools, it will equip teachers with proven theoretical models and practical skills to understand the trauma of bullying and children’s subsequent anger management problems. The National Autistic Society is running a course on March 17 for mainstream teachers and learning support assistants encountering autistic spectrum disorders (ASDs) for the first time. Venue: the Thistle Hotel, Newcastle. Presented by Carol Povey, the NAS’s regional co-ordinator for Greater London and the south east, and Jacqui Ashton Smith, principal of Hellen Allison School, Kent, it will explore the impact of the whole range of ASDs on behaviour, teaching and learning. Topics include: strategies for classroom management; supporting a child with ASD; whole school education; and social support in and out of the school. Fee: pound;99 plus VAT for professionals.

“Dyslexia: the dividends from research to policy and practice” is the theme of the British Dyslexia Association’s international conference to be held at Warwick University, March 27-30. Speakers include: Dr Angela Fawcett, editor of Dyslexia: an International Journal of Research and Practice, and Dr Guinevere Eden, director, Laboratory of Brain Function and Behaviour, Georgetown University Medical Centre, Washington.
