The TOP Link initiative, part of the Youth Sport Trust’s “Step into Sport” programme, encourages secondary students to organise and run summer festivals of sport or dance for partner primary or special schools. In February and March each year, 600 higher education students run 18 conferences at universities to show 14 to 16 year-olds how to organise the festivals. Continuing until March 2006, Step into Sport is designed to recruit, train, deploy and support young sports leaders.

Bath University has introduced a new foundation degree in sports performance, particularly aimed at young people who missed out on degree-level study because they were focusing on achieving their own sporting goals. The university’s world-class facilities include an indoor running track, a 50-metre swimming pool and a fitness suite that have been used by Olympic athletes. The two-year full-time course begins in September and a three-year part-time version in January.

EVENT

Members of the public are invited to take part in the Kellogg’s Corn Flakes Great Walk during the period April 28 to September 18. Between those dates, Karen Churches, aged 38, will walk from John O’Groats to Land’s End, including walks from Belfast to Dublin and around the Republic of Ireland, encouraging the nation to get active. Adults and children can join a series of 10km (six-mile) sponsored walking events in towns and cities along the route to raise funds for their chosen charities or accredited school projects. The initiative is supported by ITV’s Britain on the Move and TV2 in the Republic of Ireland. Contact Elizabeth Ayto.
