NPQH courses ‘too expensive’

SENIOR teachers are put off training for headship because the courses are too expensive, time-consuming or too far away, a survey of almost 800 deputies has concluded.

The study, commissioned by the Association of Teachers and Lecturers, found two-thirds of those who might have been interested in taking the National Professional Qualification for Headship were put off by the cost. The NPQH was introduced this year and will become mandatory for all new heads by 2002.
