Number of Scottish teachers is set to rise

* The number of Scottish teachers is set to rise to a peak of 51,800 by 2004 and then fall away as pupil rolls plummet, the Scottish Executive announced this week. In primary, the numbers will rise from 22,200 this year to 22,700. In secondary, the 2002 figure of 24,800 will increase to 25,200 by 2004.
