Seven hundred school leaders in England are earning more than #163;100,000 a year, according to official figures released last week.

The Department for Education statistics showed that 500 people earn between #163;100,000 and #163;109,999, while 200 have a salary of more than #163;110,000.

There were 60,000 leadership posts in schools in November 2011, defined as heads, deputy heads or assistant heads.

The figures showed that 600 leaders in secondary schools earn more than #163;100,000, half of whom work in academies. A further 100 staff in primary schools earn in excess of #163;100,000.

The lowest point on the leadership pay scale is #163;37,461, but average leadership pay in primaries is #163;51,800. For secondary leaders it is #163;60,900 and in academies, which are overwhelmingly secondaries, the average is #163;61,500.

Previous analysis by the DfE found that academies pay slightly more on average to younger teachers than maintained secondary schools. But the overall salary for academies is pulled down by the younger age mix of their teacher workforce compared with maintained schools.

Average salary of school leaders

Nursery and primary - #163;51,800

Secondary - #163;60,900

Special and centrally employed - #163;57,400

Academies - #163;61,500

Average salary of classroom teachers

Nursery and primary - #163;32,600

Secondary - #163;36,200

Special and centrally employed - #163;37,300

Academies - #163;35,700.
