One in five schools in Syria has been destroyed as the fighting between rebel and regime forces enters its third year, a study by international children’s charity Unicef has found.
Almost 800,000 children under the age of 14 have been displaced, with their opportunities for education “severely constrained”, the report says.
The humanitarian response so far has resulted in 75,200 school-aged children being enrolled in learning programmes. There are plans for a further 1 million to be given educational supplies and 150,000 to be provided with remedial classes and recreational activities by next month.
Unicef is also working with the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and the World Food Programme to estimate the requirements in neighbouring countries, including how much money is needed to provide appropriate education.
A study of the impact of armed conflict on education in 2011 found that it is one of the major reasons why universal primary education up to the age of 11 - a UN Millennium Development Goal for 2015 - is yet to be attained.
Half of the world’s primary-aged children who are not in school are estimated to live in states affected by conflict.
