School nurses are being brought into the heart of the policy agenda by being given new roles to audit schools’ health needs and promote healthy lifestyles. The target is to ensure every school is a “health-promoting school” and new community school by 2007. School nurses will also be expected to support pupils with chronic health problems as well as those who are vulnerable and may be at risk of going off the rails.
The revamped service follows interviews with 262 school nurses.
