* NUT members have until Monday lunchtime to vote on who will lead them into the new millennium. Incumbent general secretary Doug McAvoy is facing a challenge from left-winger Christine Blower.

Both are opposed to the Government’s plans to introduce performance-related pay. But while Miss Blower has staked her claim to the leadership post on improving union democracy, Mr McAvoy’s supporters have been warning that her election would lead to a left-wing takeover.

Miss Blower, who works in a behaviour support unit in west London, has accused Tony Blair of adopting Tory policies.

She has also raised queries about Mr McAvoy taking policy decisions without discussion. The results will be known by Tuesday evening.
