Overshadowed by his health-care triumph, US President Barack Obama also scored a significant breakthrough in federal student loans which will eliminate fees paid to private banks to act as intermediaries. The measure was approved by the House of Representatives, and the Congressional Budget Office estimates that it will reduce costs by $61 billion over 10 years.
