Boys are doing badly at school, the heidies’ conference agreed, although Professor Lindsay Paterson of Moray House Institute recalled that Judith Gillespie, convener of the Scottish Parent Teacher Council, had a simple explanation. Boys are thicker than girls. Being a good academic, however, Paterson had figures to disprove even that apparently “fool”-proof assumption.

One Glasgow heidie confessed to having problems with the mix of his intake. “I’ve got 60 per cent boys, 30 per cent girls and the remainder are under consideration at the moment,” he disclosed.
