In other words, some school sides are hacked off at getting a good gubbing every week. Negative attitudes towards other teams and refs, baying parents and coaches and poor social conduct are the downside of the people’s game played in schools.

If you can’t beat ‘em, change the rules is the council’s motto. It wants only seven-a-side school matches conducted “in a multi-game” or festival. Results should have no bearing on the next round of matches.

Motherwell, Airdrie, Clyde and Albion Rovers are rumoured to be keen on the idea.
