Ofsted is turning its critical eye on itself after the new chief inspector learnt one in 10 colleges believe inspections are a waste of time.

Christine Gilbert told delegates at the Association of Colleges conference last week that she was concerned about the figures, which emerged from questionnaires filled out by principals after inspection.

In her first speech to college staff since taking up her post in October, she said: “Just over 10 per cent of colleges felt that the negative aspects outweighed the gains. That’s too high.” Ofsted needed to do more, she said.

“Better inspection and care - this isn’t just an ideal aspiration, We really do mean it.”
