Sir Michael Wilshaw wants to reinspect 1,000 schools to determine whether they are genuinely “outstanding” or merely “good” (“New chief’s vision for Ofsted will ramp up pressure on schools”, 10 February). Can he seriously be suggesting that this is an appropriate way to spend almost #163;10 million of public money?

I would like to suggest an alternative. I propose that Sir Michael’s contract be amended to include a bonus of #163;1 million per year, dependent on significant improvements to the education provided by state schools as a result of measures he has introduced. Perhaps then he would be more focused on strengthening the state sector, rather than being hell-bent on destroying it as he seems to be at present.
