Mike Kent has made a strong point about the fear engendered by the increasingly tough Ofsted demands on schools, irrespective of the context they operate in (“Let’s be honest. We are afraid”, 15 July).

Headteachers of schools in communities where socio-economic and other pressures are acute are on a hiding to nothing. If they are able to convince inspectors via their data that they are superheroes who continue to “transform” their schools, then they will survive. If not, they won’t.

While the iniquities inherent in the power wielded by other institutions in the UK are being rightly exposed at present, somehow the untrammelled power of Ofsted over schools remains untouched.

Something needs to change if we are to make it possible to have enough able professionals willing to do the job of headteacher in the coming years.
