Last week’s New Statesman included some awful tales of elitism and hypocrisy in the independent sector, as told by Hywel Wlliams, a former English master at Rugby (apparently the boys used to call him Whopper). Among them was the one about a former gay head of tat institution. When the governors were told of their employee’s sexual orientation, one was heard to say: “Do you mean to tell me, headmaster, that there are men walking the streets of London who can say, ‘I have slept with the headmaster of Rugby?’”
