Around 2,600 more full-time equivalent teachers are employed by councils than in 1999, according to a public sector employment bulletin. But over the same six-year period to late 2005, the number of education support staff grew by some 42 per cent, to more than 12,000 staff. These include classroom assistants and clerical staff in schools.
