Labour councillors last week went for the balanced ticket, turfing out a second nomination by the Kirk: the Rev R Duncan, school chaplain in Lochgelly and former RE teacher.
They also rejected nominations from the Spiritual Assembly of the Baha’is of North East Fife and Fife Baptist Association, the latter represented by a Dr Lovegrove, said to be “a person of proven integrity and public spirit”. That cut no ice. Nor did the nomination of a Mr Dove of the Scottish Episcopal Church.
Over in Falkirk there is no such clamour. An appeal to the Association of Churches Together, an ecumenical Christian organisation, produced no third representative. The Episcopal Church answered the council’s plea by drafting Ian MacGregor, former rector of Bathgate Academy.
