Scottish teachers’ wages `relatively high’ (23 September)
As ever, a consultation that starts with the answer and works its way back.

This article has REALLY annoyed me. I regularly leave school two hours after the kids have gone because I spend that time marking, preparing lessons, photocopying and mounting displays for my class. Then I usually spend at least another hour-and-a-half to two hours on teaching-related work in the evenings. Even though maths is not my strongest subject, I make that an extra 17.5 to 20 hours during the week. That’s not counting all the websurfing, research and resource-making I do at the weekends.

Who cares what these surveys say? There never was an extra pound; gained in a worker’s pay packet by sheafs of paper. Concerted, united and persistent industrial action is what it will take.

Stirling University has just completed a worthwhile body of research, which reveals that I am the tallest person in the world - it did of course exclude anyone taller than me from the study.

Even if teachers are paid comparatively well, so what? The appetite for denigrating anyone who earns more than yourself is playing into the hands of those individuals who believe that all public employees should be made unemployed or have their standard of living reduced to fall in line with emerging countries.
