New National courses arrive bang on time (4 May)

“He insisted no teachers should be teaching the new National 4 and 5 courses next session, as they were not supposed to be implemented until August 2013, when the current S2 pupils enter S4.”

Larry, we and about 47 per cent of schools are starting in August. My colleagues and I are cutting and pasting material from SGInt2H to make new N54 courses ... So why are we rearranging deckchairs?

For modern foreign languages, the new National 4 and 5 courses offer a better deal to teachers who have been teaching Intermediate 1 and 2 courses in bi-level classes. There is a hierarchy in the new National 4 and 5 courses which was not provided in the traditional Int 1 and Int 2 courses. Ditto with Higher and Advanced Higher which will, hopefully, make the Advanced Higher more achievable.

Course notes have been informed by subject specialism, but desired changes in course assessments have not been approved. However, the new themes and sub-themes give MFL a chance to develop a more modern classroom, which is vital for a subject area that does not get the attention it deserves. Cross-curricular, literacy across the school and international education and citizenship are integral aspects of MFL. Internal assessment will be vital for those who wish to develop more flexibility in the language aquisition of their pupils and consider teaching and assessing skills in an integrated way.
