Where you live still determines success (15 June)

Bill Maxwell, chief executive of Education Scotland, said: “Establishing this benchmark is an important step. It means that, in the future, we will be able to compare progress on the proportion of schools and pre-school centres receiving positive inspection reports.”

Have we not been benchmarking progress for 20 years now? Or do we just recalibrate when it gets embarrassing? Obviously with the deprivation and percentage of Neets not reducing, what we are doing is not working. Poverty is not an excuse, but it is a reason, and aspiration and hope for the future is an incredibly powerful motivator.

Call for curriculum rethink (8 June)

Watched Mr Russell dismissing the report as not being completed by anyone who knows about education. Either he has not read the list or was venturing into the area of mistruths.

EIS chief tells Russell to ‘start listening’ (8 June)

I wasn’t at the EIS AGM this year but I was the author of the motion to retain the chartered teacher grade and I am delighted to see Alan has pursued the matter in his AGM speech.

The bid to end chartered teachers shows all that is bad in education management - no thought, no care, just contempt.

I hope Russell will listen to the right people, though - teachers and those elected to speak on behalf of their colleagues - not managers who want to wreck teaching as a profession.
