Forget Tamagotchis - the “virtual baby” is the new way to introduce children to the wonders, or otherwise, of child-rearing.

The new application, developed by BBC Jam, the corporation’s online learning service, invites pupils to adopt an online tot. They must then learn to bottle-feed, change nappies and sooth tantrums in a bid to increase their baby’s happiness score.

The child comes with its own stroller, beach ball and wall charts. Players can select from a range of babies on a menu.

It is part of Child Development, a learning zone that features video clips of growing children and excerpts from the popular Lord Robert Winston-lead series Child of our Time.

The pages will be launched in January.
