This half-term, a group of Hartcliffe School students in Bristol are taking a play about racism, set during the Holocaust, to Bordeaux and Hanover as part of the 50th anniversary of Bristol’s twinning with the two cities. Legacy to Germany and France, is based on the first-hand experiences of a German Jewish woman who was smuggled out of Berlin.
Leicester Haymarket’s tour of the highly acclaimed Two Weeks with the Queen ends tomorrow. The bittersweet comedy about a child facing up to illness and death is presented by Haymarket’s Outreach and Education department. Another end-of-tour opportunity, this time at Lakeside Theatre in Essex. Scenes from Leviathan, written by Rod Wooden, writer in residence at Colchester’s Mercury Theatre and the University of Essex, ends tomorrow night. Set in the unlikely scenarios of 17th century Ireland, contemporary South America and on the A12, it looks at colonialism past and present. Tickets can be booked on 01206 873261.
The search is on for entries for the 1998 Manchester Airport Young Playwrights’ Festival. Open to 11 to 25-year-olds who live in the north-west, scripts must be in by September 15.
Eighteen will be selected for intensive workshopping and at least six will be further developed before their world premi res in March 1998, performed and directed by professionals from Manchester’s Contact Theatre Company. Nadya, the National Theatre’s drama group for young Asian women, is showing a video in which group members interview three prominent Asian women: Kamlesh Bahl, chair of the Equal Opportunities Commission, Baroness Flather, the first woman to sit in the House of Lords and Usha Sood, the first Asian woman judge in this country. The video can be seen on June 2 at 7.15pm at St John’s Church, Waterloo Roundabout, London SE1 as part of the annual Waterloo Connections Festival.
