Sale Grammar school in Trafford has voted not to become grant-maintained in a move which could make it the only selective school controlled by the Labour authority.

The ballot resulted in a 64.4 per cent no vote. Three other grammars in the local authority have won ballots to opt out and are waiting for the Secretary of State’s permission. This would make half the schools in Trafford grant-maintained. Altrincham Boys’, which has already opted out, has introduced its own selection exam and this year 560 boys competed for 150 places.
