Winchester college has appointed Dr Ralph Douglas Townsend, head of Oundle school, as its next headmaster. Dr Townsend will take over from Tommy Cookson in September 2005. Mr Cookson became temporary head of the pound;20,000-a-year public school last year after the departure of its previous head, Nick Tate.
