Your anonymous Talkback correspondent (TES, August 18) recalls a time when, before clause 28, “gay teachers could teach without all this pain”. Worryingly, he cites colleagues who “shy away” from homophobia in school.
Even though some young people will never entertain alternative points of view, teachers have a duty to make pupls think. We have a captive audience for far longer than anyone else in society. If we do not challenge prejudice, who will?
Colleagues anxious about broaching the subject of homophobia could start by borrowing from a Simpsons addict the episode “Homer’s Phobia” and showing it in PSE.
