Exam giant City Guilds has moved back into profit after falling into the red last year.

The board reported a Pounds 3.8 million surplus for the year ending September 30, turning round a 1996 deficit of more than Pounds 3m. Chairman Paul Wates said income had grown by 13 per cent, mainly due to increased demand for national vocational qualifications.
