A Northamptonshire secondary school has scrapped plans for a novel way to stop teenagers swearing after a national outcry.
The number of times a group of half-a-dozen 15 to 16-year-olds at Weavers school in Wellingborough used the F-word was to be tallied on the blackboard.
If they swore more than five times, they were to be reprimanded in class.
Fewer, and the teacher would speak to them after the class ended.
But Alan Large, headteacher, has decided not to continue with the policy this term after parents, MPs and family-rights groups called for his resignation.
He said: “It was a policy we were going to use with a small minority of people, but because of the gross misrepresentation in the press it will be totally unworkable.
“We do not allow swearing in school and will continue with our current policy.”
The school also planned “praise postcards” to send to parents of pupils who did not swear.
