Winner: Skellig Large Scheme of Work, Murray Park School, Derby

One of the most popular books in schools continues to be David Almond’s Skellig, the story of a boy who discovers a strange man in a garage who may be an angel. To help teachers explore the book with their classes, the English department at Murray Park School developed this ambitious scheme of work, which contains enough activities for at least 30 lessons.

The material, compiled by teacher Jodi Steans, includes PowerPoint presentations to be shown on interactive whiteboards, worksheets and homework tasks.

Since it was uploaded to the resource bank on the TES website (www.tes.co.ukresources), it has been downloaded by more than 50,000 teachers and is one of the most highly rated collections of material on the site. Teachers at other schools have also praised the scheme, saying it has saved them hours of preparation.

Judges’ verdict: The panel thought the scheme of work was very well presented and clearly highly popular with teachers. “The resource pack provided a massive amount of material to use,” the judges said. “And Skellig was a brilliant choice of book, because so many pupils read it.”
