The Wallsend Co-operative Society’s school in the 1870s was primarily inspired by the social and educational ideas of Robert Owen, whose bust was proudly displayed in the society’s library for many years (“Co-op school that last taught pupils in 1875 shows up alive and well in 2010”, September 17). It’s probable, therefore, that Owen’s belief in a humane and child-centred education underpinned the Wallsend Co-op school, more so than simply preparing children for life in the factory system.

It’s good to see the founding principles of the Wallsend Co-op school resurfacing through the modern generation.
