* Oxford University has begun an enquiry after a study by two of its academics showed independent school pupils with straight As were more likely to be offered a place than state-sector students with similar grades. Gerard McCrum and Professor AH Halsey analysed 6,000 cases and found independent school applicants were 1.2 times more likely to be offered a place. The university said the imbalance was not deliberate.
