HARRIET Harman, who chairs the Childcare Commission which advises the Government on how best it can supply care, said mothers or fathers should be paid pound;150 a week to stay at home and look after their children if they wish.

The state should pay thi in the way that it pays the state pension, she said. The commission’s final report is due next January.

Meanwhile, a report by the National Family and Parenting Institute shows Britain is one of Europe’s least family-friendly countries.
