The mystery of what some monks wear under their habits will soon be solved. Ampleforth college in Yorkshire, the Roman Catholic public school, has launched its own brand of boxer shorts. The school’s motto “Dieu Le Ward” (God Guard It) is featured along the fly.

Philip Turner, director of Smart Turnout, which produces the school’s merchandise, said: “I didn’t think the monks would be very chuffed with them, but Father Jeremy, who runs the school shop, found them very droll.” Girls have recently been admitted to the school, and a matching set of knickers has not been ruled out.
