NEW term, new country. Laura Spence, the Tyneside teeenager rejected to study medicine by Oxford University, is paying her way through Harvard with the help of the Mail on Sunday.

The first of a regular column for the paper reveals that she opened her A level results in the company of 25 reporters in raincoats, but her mum was the first to know of her fie As and the exam board's letter saying she had achieved one of the five best geography scores in the country.

At first she found the media attention bewildering, but she refused to be interviewed because she had never disputed her Oxford rejection and could see the logic of both sides of the argument - Oxford University's and Gordon Brown's.
