A LONG WAY HOME. By Ann Turnbull. Walker, pound;3.99.
This short book manages to pack a great deal into its pages. Helen, whose mother has just died, searches for her father’s family. Her adventures paint a clear picture of life in 1930s England. The prose is simple in the best way: strong, limpid and fluent. This book ought to persuade children of all ages and both sexes that historical novels are worth reading.
