Everyone has seen the NSPCC’s recent set of powerful posters about violent punishment, using bright children’s book colours to show irate exhausted mothers and their troubled or violent offspring. Encouraging Better Behaviour is an equally effective 24-page booklet aimed at parents themselves. It provides clear and honest advice about how and why children misbehave at different ages and the kinds of assumptions grown-ups use to make sense of their conduct. It deals with the myths and realities of the effectiveness of physical punishments and suggests ways of managing adult anger.Up to 75 copies can be ordered free from the Publications and Information Unit, NSPCC, Weston House, 42 Curtain Road, London EC2A 3NH.
