PERTH and Kinross claims it is the first council in Scotland to launch its own version of HMI’s Standards and Quality report for every one of its 89 schools.

The reports will be issued annually and sent to all parents. Modelled on the HMI document which takes the temperature of Scottish schools every three years, the Perth and Kinross accounts have been drawn up using the 33 performance indicators from the Inspectorate’s How Good Is Our School? report.

In the last national report, for 1992-95, Douglas Osler, senior chief inspector of schools, suggested that schools should produce their own Standards and Quality documents for parents. East Renfrewshire is likely to be the second council to take up the idea.

At the launch in Auchterarder High on Monday, Bob McKay, Perth and Kinross’s director of education, said the intention was not just to hold schools accountable to parents and promote attainment but to focus on the full range of learning.

“The national agenda on setting targets will be best realised by celebrating success and the effective learning and teaching of the whole child,” Mr McKay said.
