Gate Gourmet notwithstanding, those who work in the part-time sector of the labour market often appear to be invisible to employer and trade union organisations.

Dan Taubman, national official for the lecturers’ union Natfhe, states that there is “an estimated 10 per cent pay gap between college lecturers and teachers” (“Simple steps to narrow pay gap, letters”, FE Focus,September 23).

Mr Taubman obviously has full-time staff in mind. Out-sourced part-time college lecturers would be dancing all the way to the bank if the pay gap between them and part-time school teachers was only a modest 10 per cent.
