The Professional Association of Teachers council has named Jean Gemmell as its preferred candidate for the post of general secretary. Ms Gemmell is deputy general secretary and ha been acting general secretary since April 1 this year.
The closing date for nominations is May 2. If the post is contested, the ballot will close on June 13 2001.
