A NEW foundation degree that sets assistants on a path to becoming qualified teachers, is being piloted at a secondary school in Corby.

The course is run by University College Northampton at Lodge Park technology college and leads to “associate teacher” status; a further 18 months study will lead to QTS.

The course is one of 12 set up this year to provide ways for assistants to get QTS.

Richard Parker, Lodge Park head, helped devise the course, and has four staff taking it. “Assistants can become sophisticated at the job but have no chance to develop their careers. It isn’t fair.”
