The Oxford study shows the extent that teachers’ salaries have fallen behind other professions:
* Since 1995, teachers’ pay has risen by up to 5.6 per cent for men and 7 per cent for women, while elsewhere wages have risen by more than 10 per cent. (Men are more likely to be at the top of the pay scale, and have therefore progressed more slowly).
* The number of teachers in their thirties has halved in the past decade - plummeting from 90,000 in 1987 to 43,000. More than two-thirds of men and three out of five women teachers are now over 40, said the Ruskin College report.
