A Durham headteacher has won an out-of-court settlement, believed to be more than Pounds 200,000, from the county council in compensation for a crippling back injury suffered when she fell from a step-ladder.

Delycia Johnson, 48, was head of Woodhouse Close Primary School when the accident happened in 1991.

The settlement was reached just before her case, supported by the National Association of Head Teachers, was due to start in Teesside County Court last week. Mrs Johnson was putting children’s work on the wall when the ladder slipped on the wet floor. The pain forced her to give up her job and she needs a stick to walk.
