TEACHERS hoping for a large increase in the annual pay round next year are likely to be disappointed.
In a letter to the teachers’ pay review body, Education Secretary David Blunkett stressed the need for the award to fit within the Government’s current spending plans and inflation targets.
He also asked the review body to make recommendations on the plans to modernise the teaching profession which were outlined in last year’s Green Paper. The proposals include a new career structure for classroom teachers, performance-related pay and fast-track promotion for high-flyers.
The review body will make its recommendations to ministers on a range of issues by early 2000 in time for the start of the new financial year in April. The changes announced in the Green Paper will come into force in September 2000.
