The Oxford study shows the extent that teachers’ salaries have fallen behind other professions:
* since 1995 teachers’ pay has risen by up to 5.6 per cent for men and 7 per cent for women while elsewhere wages have risen by more than 10 per cent.
* The number of teachers in their thirties has halved in the past decade - plummeting from 90,000 in 1987 to 43,000. More than two-thirds of men and three out of five women teachers are now over 40, said the report, by researchers at Ruskin College.
