ITALY: The education ministry is liable for damages if a child is hurt at school, the supreme court has ruled, writes David Newbold.

It awarded 12 million lire (Pounds 4,000), to the parents of a child who broke two teeth after being tripped up at his Milan primary school. Previously, teachers were held to be personally responsible for accidents which happened to children under their supervision, and all schools take out insurance to cover such incidents.
