Continuing professional development for secondary PE teachers has not matched the large strides made in primary schools, the Donaldson review of teacher education has been told.

The Association for Physical Education Scotland, in its submission to the review, highlights the impact on the primary sector since the national PE review in 2004, including postgraduate certificates at Glasgow and Edinburgh universities that have been undertaken by almost 1,000 primary teachers. Subsequently, more than 200 have become CPD tutors for primary PE.

The association is beginning to work with local authorities and teachers in an attempt to bring about similar progress at secondary level.

Concern is also raised about universities’ apparent failure to work closely with local authorities and schools, leading to gaps between the campus and school experience.

The Scottish Primary Physical Education Project, however, is beginning to address such concerns, says the submission.
