Auchenback Primary in East Renfrewshire is helping Turkish education officials to prepare for their own version of the Scottish “Active Schools” programme as part of the International Inspiration scheme.

Last month, the school welcomed a headteacher and a PE teacher from Bereketli Regional Boarding School in Trabzon, Turkey, who experienced a week of sports activities and PE classes, observed Active Schools fitness assessments, ate with the breakfast club and saw support staff demonstrate movement exercises.

Project leader and depute head Rosemary Dobson and a PE teacher from Auchenback will visit their partner school in Trabzon for a week later this month to exchange ideas and advise teachers.

The Turkish Government is keen to develop the “Active Schools” model in all the country’s schools and has begun training teachers for the first stage of the process.

International Inspiration is part of the London 2012 Olympic Legacy programme and is sponsored by the British Council and Scotland’s Youth Sport Trust. Fifteen Scottish schools will be working with schools in Turkey for three years, exchanging ideas about PE teaching, as well as developing relationships that will contribute to the citizenship and social studies Curriculum for Excellence outcomes.
