* By coincidence, the head of the Ofsted inspectorate south of the border was predicting this week that GCSEs and A-levels were unlikely to survive - despite the Westminster Government’s insistence that they are here to stay.

In an interview with The Times, David Bell, the Scots-born chief inspector of schools in England, said that this was a case where “practice might outstrip policy”.
